Funds Run

Hello Friends,

I want to tell you a little about the girls raising some money for their school, and a lot about the support of our friends and family.

The girls just completed the 2019 Boosterthon “Fun Run” at the school. This fundraising event combines school-wide activities, online adventures, donation solicitation, and physical activity to benefit the school. This year the funds will help St. Viator School blend classical classroom learning with technological tools while modifying the classroom layout. We are adding stations, smart boards and computer-based tools to our book and desk classroom situation. Pretty neat stuff.

Boosterthon is the company that organizes this fundraising event. They have a website where students set up a video (which both Sweetie and the Cricket enjoyed making), send out solicitation emails, and track their progress on a rudimentary dashboard. Staff members with catchy codenames (like “Adventure Abbey”) spend time in the school hyping the kids up and building enthusiasm. As the students reach fundraising benchmarks they earn a variety of prizes. These are mostly knickknacks, but they tend to revolve around physical activity and play. This flurry of activity swirls around the school for two weeks until the actual day of the run.

Boosterthon handles all the staging, lighting, and entertainment for the run as well. Parent volunteers count/tally laps while others come out to cheer on the runners. The goal for all students is thirty-five laps around the course, a good balance between challenging and fun.

It’s been eye-opening to learn how our tuition covers the operation and the maintenance of the school, but not necessarily innovation. The money raised through the Boosterthon fun run helps on that front. Combined, the girls raised $875 dollars, all donated by family and friends. So we say a big “Thank you!” to all of you who supported the girls and pledged to their run. We definitely appreciate you and your donations.

The Fun Run has been successful the past three years, so I imagine we’ll do it again next year. The girls were proud of their contribution to the school, and they had a great time running. Need a good fundraising event for your school? Maybe check out Boosterthon to see if they operate in your area. In the event that you are interested in supporting us next year, you can contact me through the comments or at dadsdiaperdetour@gmail.com, and I will add your email to the contact list. We’ll see you out there!

Cookies for All!

Hello Friends,

The main push of Sweetie’s Girl Scout Cookie sales has wrapped, and we are now tasked with sorting orders and delivering the goods. Here’s a snapshot of our house:

I want to thank all of you who bought cookies this year in support of Sweetie, the Daisy Scouts and Girl Scouts in general. This first wave of sales had Sweetie structuring a website (with Wife’s assistance), making cold-calls (okay, I dialed), and even working the ground game. If you connected with her via these efforts, you helped her reach 75% of her sales goal. Thank you.

Now don’t fret if you are reading this and wishing you could get some Girl Scout Cookies. I can still hook you up, but there’s a catch. The cookies would have to be ordered through Sweetie’s online sales page and would be delivered to your home. All good there. The downside is that under this option, you would have to pay delivery. Boo. If ya’ gotta have ’em though, hit me up at dadsdiaperdetour@gmail.com and I will send you the link.

Take care, friends. We’ll see you out there. Now to exercise some self-control!

Come Winter, Come Winterfest!

Hello Friends,

Did you miss us? I’ve missed you all. We have been super busy since October. I have so much to post about, and so little time. Why so busy, you ask? Well, it’s time for the St. Viator Winterfest once again!

Starting at 5:00 PM this Friday, November 30th, Winterfest goes through the weekend until 4:00 PM on Sunday. With a skate rink, Mistletoe Market, Tree and Wreath sale, hot cocoa, and more, the fest happens in and around the St. Viator Recreation Center. There is holiday fun all over, and plenty of opportunities for fun winter photos!

I know some of you already have weekend plans (Happy Birthday B!), but for the rest of you, come on by and check out Winterfest! Need more details? Here’s the Facebook event page with the details: www.facebook.com/events/341301753285197/.

I will be at Winterfest on Friday and Sunday for sure. The girls will be in and around as the weather permits. If you happen to see me, say hello – I’ll buy you a cup of hot cocoa!

Hope to see you there!

Tonight and Tomorrow – Last Chance!

Hello Friends,

That’s right, tonight and tomorrow are the last two nights of the Stairway to Insanity!

Again, amatuer haunt, good value at $10. I’m headed up at 6:30 tonight. Hope to see you there!

Stairway to Insanity

Hello Friends,

Tonight I’ll be climbing the stairway to the second floor of the St. Viator Elementary School Gymnasium. I am volunteering in tonight’s Stairway to Insanity Haunted House!

Not sure what you should do on this chilly, dreary, rainy night? Check out this review of last year’s haunt (this year is pending) and see if it doesn’t help you decide:

Come on over to the school for a value-haunt, spooky time. And then go out and get a big ol’ bowl of soup or some hot noodles or something else warm and filling. Whatever you do, make it a great night. We’ll see you out there, friends!

New Sticker for the Ride

Hello Friends,

I’ve never been one to put stickers on my cars. This is strange to me because I have put them just on just about everything else I own. Bicycles, guitar cases, water bottles, notebooks, toolboxes – all decorated with a variety of stickers. I finally found one I could commit to however, and today put it on the ride.

This is the second year that Sweetie enrolled in Daisy Scouts through the school. She has two great troop leaders and a bunch of other Moms who step in to assist. Their focus is on crafts, activities and friendship. Of course they sell cookies, but they don’t fixate on the sales. Funny how many stories I hear of that ruining the experience.

I was a Cub Scout and Webelo growing up, so I dig her participation. While I don’t know how much knot-tying and fire-starting the girls are going to learn, they are off to a great start. Trips to nature centers and animal shelters, and singing at the school Winterfest are just a couple of the things they get into besides their meetings.

Got a scout (Cub, Boy, Daisy, Brownie, Girl, etc.)? I hope their/your experience is as good as ours has been. Remember to support ’em, those cookies don’t sell themselves! Ok, well, they kinda do! We’ll see you out there, friends.

STI 2018 – It’s Coming!

Hello Friends,

The second floor of the St. Viator Gymnasium is undergoing its annual transformation:

All these creepy things signify it is time for the haunted house! That’s right, the Stairway to Insanity is under construction again! I think I have noted before how I don’t love this name, but this year I learned the origin. The organizers used to carry all the props and all the walls up the stairs to set up. One of them thought, this is insanity,” and poof.

I will post another update as the decorations go up, and of course the flier when we get it. Here’s the quick info: $10 a ticket, running 7PM to 10 PM on Friday and Saturday for the next three weekends. If you’re looking for a creepy/scary (but not horrifying) time, consider this amateur, “value” haunt. They have an event page on Facebook, so check ’em out. Come Halloween!

Affy Tapples for All!

Hello Friends,

I don’t use this blog to push many products or sell stuff, but this post is an exception. With that clear, I won’t be offended if you back out right now.

The girls sell a lot of stuff as fundraising for St. Viator School and I think you all might be interested in some of these things. For example, around February we will sell Girl Scout Cookies. I had so many, “Why didn’t you tell me” comments last year that I am going to advertise hard this year. Today’s post is about another such tasty item.

Yes friends, it’s Taffy Apple sales time. I feel like you can’t make it through childhood in the Chicagoland area without eating Taffy Apples at some point.

This time the sales benefit the St. Viator Elementary School Halloween Party. This annual event is a fun, costumed, music and food celebration. It’s another chance for the kids to dress up witb plenty of space to run and dance around. I’ll be posting more information about the party and the St. Viator Haunted House as we roll into October.

So that’s the pitch, at least from my end. I think Affy Tapples sell themselves – you either love ’em or not. If you’re interested then contact me directly. Don’t have my number? Drop me an email message at dadsdiaperdetour@gmail.com and we’ll work out an order.

Alright then, friends, think it over and let me know before September 26th. And remember, make it a great day! We’ll see you out there.

Picture Day! (2018)

Hello Friends,

Today is in fact picture day at St. Viator School. I think this mat be my most favorite day of the year. I love seeing the kids, particularly my own, all dressed up.

Wife picked up outfits for the girls and they were beyond excited. They also loved having Wife fuss over them and style their hair (we’ll see how that held up to a day of school). I got to walk them to school though, so everything is all right.

I hope the day is going well for you all out there. Remember to share those school pics as they come in!

Happy, Hot, Monday!

Hello Friends,

Full disclosure – only half of this title is true. It is hot and humid here, typical Chicago late August weather. I remember sitting in classes at university just sweltering in the historical, not-modernized (read: not air conditioned), classrooms. And speaking of classes…

Yeah, neither girl wanted to get up for school today. It took a solid twenty minutes of rousing to just get them dressed. Things moved along, slowly but surely, until we got to the door. There Cricket flatly announced, “I’m not going to school.”

She did go, but she refused to get in the photo. And Sweetie? Despite the smile, she is not happy. The school recommended gym uniforms for all students due to the heat index. She wanted to wear her usual – polyester jumper over her uniform shirt (with undershirt). This warm weather option was the compromise. And when we rolled up to the sea of navy blue gym uniforms? “I wish we could go home and change into my gym uniform.” Ah heck.

Despite the heat and the sluggish start the girls are good. Wife is out of town unt late Wednesday, and they are not pleased about that. But we all promised to be good to each other the next couple of days, so things should be just fine. And so we roll into school week 2! I hope you are staying cool out there friends. As I tell the girls – make it a good day!
