In the Books

Hello Friends,

After a whirlwind two weeks, we can officially say our Summer 2019 is “in the books” (hence the post title). But I return to you as we celebrate our first day back to St. Viator Elementary School for the 2019-2020 school year.

You may be thinking, “Wait, is the Cricket in a uniform?” And the answer is yes, she is. She is starting Kindergarten and that means uniforms, no naps, and the beginning of her permanent record.

She was very excited, even though today was just a one hour welcoming day. Tomorrow is her real first day, but she dressed up just the same (and we don’t really buy into the permanent record thing).

Sweetie was excited too…no, really. She didn’t show it the entire morning, but she was glad to get back to her friends. If only I would stop making her pose with these signs all over the house, and stairs, and outside, and in the school yard. Well, that’s not going to happen.

And so, as I stated, our summer is in the books. But I invoke the spirit of Dad jokes to say that our girls are also in the books. Gosh, that was way more funny in my head. Anyway, we’re back at school now. Best to you and yours as they head back, here’s hoping it’s a smooth and positive end of your summer.

Going Back to School

Hello Friends,

Of course there is so much catching up to do and so much for us to tell you all. But this is back to school season, so the rest can wait. I have heard from my readership, and I’m listening! So here are some pics of the girls:

That’s right, just like so many of you out there, we have sent our girls back to school!

Oh yes, the Cricket has gone in to PreK-3, joining her big sister at St. Viator Elementary. And yes, she did insist on wearing a tiara to the welcoming tea program. Hey, best the teachers and staff know who they are dealing with up front.

Okay, she did tone it down for her first “official” day in the classroom. Nice stairs, eh? (We are back in the house, more on that later.)

Sweetie is excited because this year she gets to wear the school uniform. This is some right-of-passage type stuff folks. But hey, no more early morning battles over her clothes!

In all honesty it’s great to see Sweetie, and all of the Kindergarten students, rocking the uniforms. They went from being little kids to being little students. It’s kind of blowing my mind.

The girls are doing great, and now back in school, so I’ve caught you up on the most important stuff. I am sure there are many questions about the house, the summer, my situation – essentially all of these new recent turns on the detour. I do have two hours a day without a child around and I hope to use more time to write and answer those questions, and address a bunch more stuff that I haven’t written about yet. So, until then…

Goin’ Back to School-y (a.k.a, Back to School 2016)

Goin’ Back to Cali…get it? Anyone? Okay, maybe I didn’t channel my inner LL Cool J as well as I wanted to for that title. Maybe I’ve been away a bit too long. Anyway…

The time has come to send Sweetie back to school. This year she is in PreK-4 – whee! Here’s us leaving home.

Oh it’s early!

Sweetie was showing mixed emotions about going back. She was happy at an earlier “Welcome Tea”, checking out her new classroom and such. But she was definitely moving slowly as we got closer to the door. And she wanted nothing to do with our cute sign. Nope, wouldn’t hold it.

Too cool for sign, just right for school.

As many of you may be experiencing (and here’s a warning for parents whose kids aren’t in school yet), Sweetie did not have much to say at pick up. One word answers to my questions, flat tone, subdued emotions. I really thought I had until her teen years for all that, but then the reason became clear:

Direct bus from school to snooze

Wow, sorry that last one is so fuzzy (firmly planted me with a camera vs. me sitting in the front seat rushing the shot with my phone at a stoplight). You get the picture though, she was worn out. I guess it will be an adjustment for her to be an “All-Day Friend”. We’re glad school is back in session, it was a fast summer and a bit hectic. With Sweetie back in class she gets some good challenges and gets to have some fun with her friends. Good stuff.

Hope your Back-to-School is going smoothly. It’s really like a month-long event with all the different starts. Regardless when they go back, I hope your little ones have a great start to their year. And hopefully it is a welcome break for all you parents as well.

Alright, we have some lunch to build, outfits to choose, and a backpack to sort – now where’s my Kangol?
